Avoid being victim to a residential fire ... practice safety this holiday season!

During the holiday season while everyone is enjoying family get-togethers, local fire departments are responding to calls of residential fires -- many due to misuse of Christmas trees. A fresh tree purchased from a lot can remain relatively fire resistant if you follow these six simple steps: 1. Make a fresh cut at the base (tree trunk) to open up pores clogged by sap. Cut off 2-3 inches from the base. The fresh cut surface should be creamy white; otherwise, the tree will not be able to "drink". 2. After the cut is made, immediately put the tree in water or the tree will not absorb the water easily. choose a sturdy stand which holds at least 1 gallon of water. Rinse the tree stand with a mixture of 1 capful of bleach in 1 cup of water before inserting the tree. This reduces the growth of micro-organisms that can block the tree's ability to absorb water. 3. Water the tree daily as an average tree may consume between a quart and a gallon of water per day. If the water level drops below the cut end of the tree, a seal will form and water will be unable to be absorbed. 4. If you want to add lights to your tree, use mini-lights as they produce less heat and reduce drying of the tree. Always check lights for frayed or cracked wiring and broken sockets before placing on the tree. Do not attempt to repair a damaged set of lights -- instead replace it. Turn off the lights when leaving the house and before going to bed. Avoid overloading the circuits. 5. Place the tree away from heat sources such as heating vents, fireplaces, woodstoves, television sets and sunny windows. 6. After the holidays, promptly remove the tree and dispose of it at an authorized tree recycling center. Never burn your tree as trees burn rapidly and can be explosive.
Practice these safety tips and have a safe holiday season!
