While on a school trip in the Bay Area, a Granite Hills High School senior witnessed an elderly male collapse. Miss Katrina Lopez immediately responded to the needs of the gentleman. She called 9-1-1 and subsequently assessed the patient, determined his lack of circulation by checking his pulse, and conducted three cycles of CPR -- breathing and compressions. The patient then started breathing on his own! Katrina continued to monitor the patient until paramedics arrived.
Katrina learned the proper steps of conducting CPR by taking a class from Apple Valley Fire District in April 2006. A year and a half later, she recalled those important skills and did not hesitate to help someone in need.
Mayor Tim Jasper and Fire Chief Doug Qualls recently honored Miss Katrina Lopez with a proclamation commending her heroic and life-saving efforts.
