Last year over 500 people were trained in the art of CPR by Apple Valley Fire District. An additional 300 were trained in standard first aid care. The total of over 800 people taking classes with the District in 2007 is one of the highest in the past five years.

According to Fire Chief Doug Qualls, "Several years ago, the Fire District recognized the need to provide low-cost classes to the general public because patients needing CPR or some kind of treatment for an injury have a better chance to survive if they are helped by bystanders while the 9-1-1 system is being activated."

The District is now a Training Center with the American Heart Association. Ten employees, including firefighters/paramedics and captains, are certified instructors. Not only do the instructors offer first-hand experience of saving lives, but empower students to understand that they can do the same.

The Disrict provides CPR and First Aid classes on the second Saturday of each month. Classes are also individually scheduled for groups of 8 or more. For registration information, call (760) 247-7618.
