On April 25, 2009, the Apple Valley Fire Protection District held an Emergency Preparedness Fair for the senior communities of Jess Ranch, Wyndham Rose, and Sun City. More than 450 people attended the Fair which was held at Jess Ranch Fire Station 337. The visitors to the Fair learned all about emergency preparedness from various vendors including the Jess Ranch HEART Program, Sun City's Neighbor-to-Neighbor Program, Allied Barton Security Services, the American Red Cross, Southern California Edison, Southwest Gas, Apple Valley Ranchos Water, and the PAL Humane Society.

In addition, volunteers from Apple Valley Emergency Communications Services (ECS) and Apple Valley Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) were at the Fair to explain their roles in helping with emergency response for the community of Apple Valley. The ECS Team, whose members are all amateur HAM radio operators, displayed the Mobile Command Bus that is used on the scene of a disaster, and encouraged people to join the ECS Team. The CERT members explained how the CERT Program benefits everyone who takes the course to know how to help themselves and their families in a disaster.

Emergency preparedness kits and supplies were on display from various vendors. Wal-Mart gave away a backpack full of supplies that can be used in a disaster. Attendees were encouraged to "get prepared" by having a 10-day supply of water, food, and other essentials in an emergency kit at home, and to keep a smaller emergency kit in their cars.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the first annual Emergency Preparedness Fair!
