Captain Rich Unferdorfer and Firefighter/Paramedic James Lyons returned safely from the Gulf Coast after a 30-day assignment with FEMA. They were tasked with providing residents with the information needed to start rebuilding their lives. Each 12-hour day consisted of ensuring that each and every resident in their assigned zone was contacted. They also assisted with minor medical needs and debris removal. "Most people we contacted lost almost everything, and yet their spirit was such that they asked us if we needed help," said Captain Unferdorfer. Both firefighters agreed that the memories of this experience would last a lifetime. They appreciated the opportunity to help where help was needed most. It is said that Hurricane Katrina is this country's most devastating natural disaster in history.
