AND THE WINNER IS ... Friends of Animals During Disasters for their commitment to animal safety during a disaster!
Apple Valley F.A.D.D. was recently honored by the San Bernardino County Fire Chief's Association for outstanding achievement by an organization in the County of San Bernardino. The Fire Chief's award, presented annually, is one of many recognitions bestowed upon F.A.D.D. since its inception in 2003.
The volunteer group consists of 40 local residents who are committed to helping evacuate and shelter animals during a disaster. Volunteers are experienced animal owners who understand the behavior of animals and how to care for them. They attend a one-day training session to learn disaster preparedness and team organization. The real focus of the training, however, is familiarity with the Town of Apple Valley Emergency Animal Evacuation & Shelter Plan. F.A.D.D. members support the Plan and work hand-in-hand with Town Animal Control during its activation.
Because animal evacuations have proven to be a challenge with past disasters, Apple Valley is fortunate to have a group of volunteers who are willing to volunteer their time as a first responder. Congratulations to all the F.A.D.D. volunteers!
The next F.A.D.D. training session will occur in May 2006. For information, call Cindy Serrano, Emergency Services Manager, at 247-7618.
